Description
To introduce students to the concepts and skills of numerical methods in engineering contexts such as signal processing, control systems and telecommunications. To make students aware of the appropriate use of numerical methods and the power (and limitations) of such tools. To provide experience in the use of general purpose computational environments for analysis and simulation of systems in a range of engineering applications. Targetted environments include Matlab and C.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate that they recognise the role of numerical approaches to solving engineering problems
2. Describe the key numerical methods applied to engineering problems
3. Choose the appropriate method to solve a problem, recognising the strengths and limitations of various methods.
4. Derive formulas for solving particular problems from a generic starting point.
5. Design an appropriate numerical approach to a given engineering problem described in general terms.
6. Demonstrate that they can communicate technical results from engineering problems solved using numerical approaches
7. Demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively in a team environment to solve engineering problems.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
NUMERICAL METHODS.
Overview of engineering computation algorithms and methods. Issues in engineering computation. Solutions to sets of linear equations. Solution of over determined systems. Polynomial curve fitting. Iterative techniques and applications. Solution of ODEs. Solution of PDEs. Random number generation.
