Description
In this module, students will investigate: the ways in which texts refect or express their context; the interactive nature of language; and the role of social context in the formation of texts, written and spoken. The module presents a theoretical framework for analysis of the contextual features of texts and introduces students to different text-types, registers and styles.The minimum exit level for this module is B1:2

1. Introduction to the relationship between language and context through analysis of specific texts, 2. Focus on use and users of language, 3. Spoken discourse, including forms of address, medium, features of spoken discourse, non-standard forms, 4. Analysing the context of written texts: the register approach, textuality,addressors, addressees and text participants, style as audience design,settings, 5. Text-type, genre, theme and interaction, 6. Text and ideology: the explicit and the implicit, point of view, the "marketization of public discourse", "politically correct" language.
