Description
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the analysis of literary texts, in this case drawn from leading contemporary writers from Britain and North America. In this module students gain knowledge of the formal, structural, symbolic and imaginative modes of literary discourse, and begin to develop skills in the techniques of literary critical analysis and interpretation (focusing on the genres of poetry, the short story and the novel) and in the skills of composing an argument based on the evidence of the text. These skills are developed through: (i) subjecting literary texts to systematic close readings, initially by students preparing the text for tutorials, and (ii) students participation in discussion of textual analysis in weekly tutorials.

Learning Outcomes
1. Conduct an analytical close reading of a literary text.
2. Construct a critical interpretation of literary texts.
3. Recognise the presence of basic literary devices.
4. Apply key literary terms in written discussion of literary texts.
5. Demonstrate an ability to compose an argument within the conventions of literary discourse.
