Description
The purpose of this module is to develop students'skills in literary analysis, drawing on texts from leading contemporary writers from Ireland, Canada and the USA. In this module students build on their knowledge of the discursive modes of functioning of imaginative literature, and broaden and deepen their skills in literary analysis and interpretation. In addition, students develop their ability both to support an argument based on textual evidence and to argue more convincingly through applying the vocabulary of literary criticism. These skills are developed through: (i) subjecting literary texts to systematic close readings, initially by students preparing the text for tutorials, and (ii) students'participation in discussion of textual analysis in weekly tutorials.

Learning Outcomes
1. Critically analyse and interpret passages of literary texts through close reading.
2. Identify important concepts in the functioning of narrative discourse.
3. Support an argument by providing relevant evidence from literary texts.
4. Recognise the use of key literary terms, devices and techniques.
5. Demonstrate precision in the use of the language of literary discourse.
