Description

To introduce students to English-language media, including newspapers, journals and magazines. To enable students to understand and critically appraise a variety of media text types from a linguistic and cultural viewpoint. To develop transferable project management skills.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate familiarity with different media genres and compare and contrast text types from linguistic and cultural perspectives
2. Create a class electronic magazine
3. Research and write up newspaper articles
4. Display evidence of skills of project management, including time-management, communications and goal setting.

Introduction to examples of English Language media from linguistic and cultural perspectives.
Linguistic features of newspapers.

headlines, facts vs. opinion, reading between the lines, journalist's point of view, letters to the editor..
Analysing advertisements in the media, e.g. newspapers, journals, magazines, billboards, radio and TV..

Critical reading of Klein'sNo Logo.
Studying project management skills (newspaper - Dublin Insight).

Analysing, writing & editing articles.
