Description
An introduction to the basic issues, concepts and approaches to the social dimensions of language; understanding the theory and investigation of regional and social dialectology, language variation and change, language choice and code-switiching, language contact,critical sociolinguistics, and issues around language and gender,language and education and language and social class.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain key terms and concepts in the field of sociolinguistics
2. Evaluate and apply key methodologies in the field of sociolinguistics in different social contexts.
3. Explain the impact of language contact.
4. Discuss the reasons for language change.
5. Investigate language choice and code switching
6. Examine different aspects of language in interaction
7. Investigate the issues surrounding language and gender
8. Explain the outcomes of language contact, including language maintenance, pigdgins and creoles and "new Englishes".
