Description
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the narrative prose of important contemporary English and Irish writers. Through the study of novels by Ian McEwan and John Banville, students develop their knowledge of contrasting narrative strategies and styles, namely the highly narrativised and emplotted fiction of McEwan and the more narrativisation-resistant mode of Banville. The modules investigation of narrative is conducted by way of the recurring themes of memory and identity. Students skills in literary analysis are developed through: (i) subjecting literary texts to systematic close readings, initially by students preparing the text for tutorials; (ii) students participation in discussion of textual analysis in weekly tutorials; (iii) students in-class presentation of their analysis of passages of narrative prose texts.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain the distinguishing narrative discursive styles of literary texts by contemporary Irish and English authors.
2. Synthesise information and ideas on literary texts drawn from primary and secondary sources.
3. Develop sustained arguments cogently and coherently in written form.
4. Employ bibliographic skills appropriate to literary discourse.
5. Demonstrate consistent use of the conventions of literary discourse in written form.
