Description
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to important texts and performances of Samuel Becketts dramatic work, with a recurring focus on Becketts representation of existence and being in time and space. Through the detailed study of a range of Becketts plays (covering long, medium-length and short works), the module allows students to develop their literary analytical and interpretive skills in the context of dramatic texts, with a strong emphasis on recurring images, motifs, colours, settings and other important visual features of Becketts plays. The development of the students skills in the analysis of dramatic texts is achieved through: i) subjecting literary texts to systematic close readings, initially by students preparing the text for tutorials; (ii) students participation in discussion of textual analysis in weekly tutorials; (iii) students in-class presentation of their analysis of passages of dramatic texts.

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify the important themes in different dramatic works of Samuel Beckett.
2. Compare and contrast the functioning, significance and representation of time and space in Samuel Becketts drama.
3. Critically analyse recurring images, motifs, colours, settings and other important visual features in Beckett's plays.
4. Demonstrate skills of effective argument and communication in oral and written form.
5. Evaluate and apply secondary critical interpretations of Becketts dramatic works.
