The purpose of this module is to introduce participants to basic sociological theories. In this module students will develop students understanding of the concepts and contexts of Civic, Social and Political Education in the current education/training environment. The module will provide a framework to develop an awareness of the key issues the field and will assist students to explore the issues underpinning the design and delivery of appropriate curricula in the field. The approachtaken allows students to research, discuss and evaluate the social context in which they work and to understand these contexts as they are shaped by wider social changes and movements. Additionally, this module provides a platform of knowledge that allows participants to tackle work that requires more in depth social analysis. 1. Define the role of CSPE and Citizenship Education in the Irish Context 2. Discuss clearly the key concepts (e.g. dignity, rights and responsibilities, democracy etc) that underpin citizenship education 3. Explain how citizenship education can help to tackle problems of exculsion and inequality for certain groups 4. Articulate issues that prevent or enable active citizenship in national and international contexts 5. Develop a repertoire of methodologies for teaching citizenship education and its related concepts to others | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
