Description
The module will enable participants to: Identify key management skills that are relevant to the professional organisation. The skills will relate to leadership in practice across a range of settings. Students will be encouraged to apply these skills in their professional practices, to reflect on the theory underpinning the skills and to identify best practice around the use of these skills at a interpersoanl and intrapersonal level. The group synergy will provide examples of the skills in action across a range of professional settings. Through the use of discussion and group work students will reflect on their own use of the skills. External expertise will be used to ensure that the module is closely aligned to current practice. Students will understand key communication theories, will reflect on the use of communication in day to day interactions, study the relevance of oral, written and Non-verbal communication and use the theory and practice of communication to reflect on the appropriate exercise of administrative/management skills in the light of higher order management skills: reading the situation, balanced judgement, intuition, political acumen.The suite of skills will include the management of diversity, coaching as part of professional practice, reflection on action and in action, report writing and oral presentation.

1. 1.Examine the theoretical assumptions that underlie management skills in the modern organisation
2. Assess the relevance of communication theory in the study of professional skills
3. 3. Identify the key skills relevant to their own organisation
4. 4. Assess the impact of diversity in the workplace from a local and global perspective
5. 5. Evaluate and utilise reflective practice within the workplace
6. 6. Examine the implications of positive psychology and interpersoanl communication in the use of Coaching as a key skill within the workplace
7. 7. Use the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired and developed within this module to bring about improvement within the organisation

Introduction to Management Skills.
What are Management Skills? Can these skills be utilised to improve leadership within the organisation? What are the relevant management skills in current education and training environments?Can these skills be classified as higher order?.

Communication.
Introduction to key communication theories. Relevance of communication in relation to the development of management skills. The importance of oral, written and NVC..

Presentation Skills.
Focus on Presentation, both oral and written. Relevance of knowing audience, developing political acumen, understanding the relevance of good communication.

Report Writing.
How to differentiate between types of reports, standards of different reports, brevity, reporting research, evaluating relevant material for report,drawing conclusions and making recommendations, selling your report to your target audience.

Library Skills.
Searching, selecting, adjudicating, assessing library materials. Learning how to use search engines, refining searches..

Managing Diversity.
Theory underpinning diversity. Different approaches to diversity, role of diversity in improving the modern organisation, different approaches from an international perspective, legal implications of diversity management. Using diversity to improve the organisation. A specific input on diversity and the Irish workplace..

Coaching.
