The purpose of this module is to assist student teachers to develop and maintain the mediation and interpersonal skills necessary for effective facilitation of teaching and learning in a second level school context. In this module students will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding related to creating a positive learning climate, responding proactively to situations of conflict, working in the context of educational diversity, working collaboratively with other partners in the education process and managing student and teacher wellbeing.Students are expected to attend and contribute to lectures, actively participate in support tutorials and seek to create a direct link with the work of their teaching practice placement. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

|
1. Evaluate their present level of mediation skills in light of a systematic understanding of contemporary knowledge of classroom management and develop a flexible plan of action to maximise a positive learning environment in a second level school context. 2. Employ, as a result of critical awareness, the requisite mediation skills to manage situations of confrontation and conflict in a second level school context. 3. Select from a range of advanced skills those necessary for working in diverse education settings and develop these to a high level leading to integration into practice. 4. Apply the basic mediation skills associated with the processes of counselling, coaching and mentoring to become a skilled helper as a teacher. 5. Act as a team member in a wide variety and often unpredictable variety of professional relationships and ill defined contexts with other partners in the education process - for example with,parents, senior management, year heads, class tutors, school chaplain, guidance counsellor, HSLO. 6. Learn to self-evaluate and take responsibility for continuing academic/professional development by identifying the coping strategies to maintain resilience, promote well being and retain a positive outlook amidst the demands and stresses of teaching in the school setting. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
