Description
This module provides the opportunity for students to complete a minimum of 100 placement hours in a guidance and counselling setting. Students will be encouraged to avail of placement experience in more than one setting to maximise the learning experience. Students who intend working as a guidance counsellor in a second level school must complete at least 50hrs of their placement in a secondary school. ES554 is a created module for the purposes of allowing students to access support resources on Moodle upon the commencement of the placement in year one but which is only assessed in year two.

Learning Outcomes
1. Experience and describe the key interactions operational in a guidance and counselling setting.
2. Demonstrate through the placement experience the link between career counselling theory and guidance counselling skills and practice.
3. Identify opportunities for the student's own career development as a guidance counsellor.
4. Recognise the linkage between a variety of organisations providing guidance & counselling.
5. Communicate appropriately with other staff in career counselling settings.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Placement Activities.
• Arranging one’s own placement and ensuring that this falls within the programme guidelines for placement completion;• arranging a preparatory visit with the placement mentor to plan for the placement;• preparing a work placement programme in consultation with their mentor;• ensuring that any activity carried out while on placement is approved by the mentor and if necessary by the principal/manager/director of the centre;• be familiar with the specific ethical and professional codes and policies of one’s placement setting;• become personally and professionally involved in the process of becoming a guidance counsellor and develop a professional attitude toward guidance counselling advocacy through placement experience;• show evidence of professional enthusiasm, personal maturity and become adept at integrating theory and practice;• be flexible, be a team-player, take initiative and be willing to extend one’s comfort zone;• abide by the Institute of Guidance Counsellor’s (IGC) Code of Ethics and ensure the client’s confidentiality and legal rights are protected;• be open-minded toward constructive feedback, be interested in improving through the acceptance of suggestions, and honestly strive to incorporate these ideas.• keep an accurate and up to date scheme of work and signed by the mentor outlining the learning activities and the achievement of identified learning outcomes during the course of their placement experience;• arranging a regular meeting time with the mentor to provide opportunities for feedback, discussion and planning..
