Module aims:<br />To facilitate students to critically consider the different paradigms of research inquiry <br />To equip students with the skills to initiate and self-direct and evaluate an innovative research project that evolves out of and which will inform educational management practice<br />To deepen students knowledge of the principles and practice of good research<br />Ethics in educational research - attend to ethical concerns when designing, doing and communicating research<br />To enhance students ability to critique and synthesize literature pertinent to their specific research area and beyond<br />To enable students to apply the current evidence base, including outcome research to develop and refine meaningful research questions <br />To enable students critically examine the application of methodologies for their specific research area and beyond<br />To enable students to consider appropriate analyses for data<br />To develop students ability to critically consider and evaluate the role of emerging and existing research evidence for their practice <br />To develop students competency and confidence as senior professional practitioner researchers<br />

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate an ability to apply different paradigms of research inquiry
2. Articulate and justify their proposed research project drawing on the literature and their professional practice to analyse it in terms of relevance, choice of methodology, data collection methods and analytical framework
3. Demonstrate proficiency in advanced literature searching/reviewing skills and an ability to critique literature in terms of theoretical positions and research evidence
4. Identify and address the contextual, ethical and quality issues in the planning and carrying out of research project work
5. Select and critique the appropriate quantitative, qualitative or mixed method methodology to address research questions and problems
6. Critique and use appropriate data collection methods
7. Select appropriate analyses for research data
8. Integrate research and evidence based insights into practice negotiating challenges as appropriate
9. Critically reflect on the process of practitioner research

Paradigms of research inquiry<br />Advanced literature searching including systematic reviews, meta-analysis<br />Framing research questions, aims, objectives and outcomes<br />Analysing the role of quantitative research designs e.g. experimental and descriptive research for psychotherapy<br />Analysing the role of qualitative research designs e.g. phenomenology, grounded theory ethnographic and action research <br />Designing and evaluating mixed methods studies<br />Audit and evaluation research for psychotherapy<br />Utilising case study research<br />Analysis of data collection methods – surveys, scales of measurement, interviews, focus groups observational methods <br />Ethics and accountability<br />Identification of interventions that may be necessary to undertake research and implement research findings and evidence based insights in counselling and psychotherapeutic practice..
