Module Aims

This module sets the level A2 from the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as its minimum exit level. It aims to enable students to:

Develop lifelong language learning strategies
Consolidate language competence and increase fluency in spoken and written interaction through French
Increase awareness and knowledge of essential aspects of contemporary and the Francophone world

Acquire transferable skills such as team work, communication and presentation skills through a variety of class activities and assignments

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

Understand the main points of clear standard speech related to the various chosen themes
Read and understand a variety of texts on these topics and notice differences between Irish and French-speaking cultures
Interact more effectively with peers through the practice of role-plays/ class debates/ unprepared conversations on familiar topics
Describe orally and in writing an experience, situation or procedure and express an opinion
Perform a simple and effective oral presentation
Demonstrate improved grammatical awareness and accuracy
Reflect on and communicate to others their language learning experience and outcomes

NOTE

Assume that a 5 credit module load represents approximately 75 hours' work, which includes all teaching, in-course assignments, laboratory work or other specialised training and an estimated private learning time associated with the module.

Indicative Syllabus

The course is conducted through French.

Classroom sessions are interactive and learner-centered.

The syllabus focuses on increasing the language fluency and accuracy as well as covering essential cultural aspects through a variety of tasks, class activities and group projects.

Students will be asked to work in pairs/groups and complete a variety of language assignments/tasks. These can include but are not limited to:

role-plays/interviews/mini-dialogues
language and cultural quizzes/cloze-tests/grammar exercises
written/aural/video comprehension exercises based on newspaper articles/extracts from novels or short stories/radio/television news or current affairs programmes/songs and video clips
group presentations based on short specific projects (e.g. organising and describing a weekend trip to France, preparing and describing a French cooking recipe, watching a French film and presenting a film review, etc.)

In addition to the course material handed out in class, a wide range of authentic electronic/digital resources will be accessible via Moodle (http://moodle.dcu.ie). Students will also be encouraged to research and use authentic materials relevant to their projects and to interact with French native speakers whenever possible.
