The module offers an introduction to ideas and movements that have played a significant role in the social, political and cultural evolution of modern France. It will also introduce reading skills in French and develop basic techniques of textual analysis .

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify the dominant factors in the evolution of modern French society
2. Read selected short literary texts in French
3. Evaluate selected literary texts and place them in their historical context.
4. Analyse thematic and stylistic features of literary texts, citing examples and making comparisons with similar texts.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
French history 1789 to the present.
Lectures will survey cultural, political and social developments in France in the modern and contemporary period..

Short French literary texts.
A selection of stories from Gratton and Le Juez (1994) will be studied..
