Description
This module sets the level B1.2 from the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as its minimum exit level. The module aims to further develop writing skills so that students can satisfactorily complete written assignments through French at the required level. The module focuses on improving fluency, accuracy and vocabulary in oral and written production in French. It enables students to attain the level of aural and reading comprehension required to understand a wide range of authentic material in French. The module consolidates and expands the student's awareness and knowledge of the key issues in contemporary France and also consolidates transferable skills such as team work and communication skills through a variety of class activities and assignments.

Learning Outcomes
1. Complete written assignments showing grammatical accuracy and knowledge of key vocabulary appropriate for this level.
2. Express his/her opinion in French, using appropriate grammatical structures and showing ability to develop an argument in a logical and well organised fashion.
3. Identify, describe and discuss key political, economic and socio-cultural issues in contemporary France.
4. Extract key points from audio-visual material and authentic documents in French.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Format.
The course is conducted through French and consists of one plenary session and two tutorials. Students are expected to attend all sessions and contribute to tutorials. They are also expected to engage in online language learning activities on a regular basis..

Class activities.
The tutorials consist of the following activities: revision and practice of key grammatical structures in context,short written tasks, structured group discussions, aural comprehension exercises, etc.Authentic materials, including newspaper articles, extracts from television news and radio programmes on contemporary issues of importance in French society are frequently used either in class or during independent learning time..

Topics.
The topics addressed in the plenary sessions and assessed aurally and in writing in the continuous assessment and examination elements may include, but are not limited to: physical geography of France, administrative divisions, population, family life, education, institutions and political life, secularism, immigration and integration, national identity, the economy, France and the wider world, etc..
