Students will study three major French and Francophone literary texts in order to develop reading skills across a range of genres and literary styles. Learning Outcomes
1. Interpret literary and filmic artefacts which arose out of the contemporary French-speaking world
2. Identify the socio-cultural backgrounds to these films and or texts
3. In written and oral productions, to display a further understanding of the cultural, artistic and literary trends which shaped the contemporary French speaking world
4. Manipulate relevant critical tools for an informed understanding understanding of these films and/or texts
5. Inscribe his/her written critical discourse in an organised, structured and informed manner

This course has been designed to help students develop and use important analytical and interpretive skills. During lectures, students are introduced to the structure, internal coherence and themes of the course texts. In tutorials, students acquire experience of identifying and critically discussing the psychological or social issues dealt with by authors, recognising how a work is related to the socio-cultural and literary movement from which it emerged, and considering the evolution of literary styles and movements in twentieth-century texts..
