Description
This knowledge and competence based module deepens the knowledge of the German language gained in year one. It sets the level B1.1 from the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as its minimum exit level.Apart from additional grammatical structures, students will also learn to express orally and in writing their point of view on a current topic. They will further develop their information-gathering skills and enhance their cultural awareness via a variety of texts and discussions.

Learning Outcomes
1. Summarise and debate key points of short written texts.
2. Identify and produce key grammatical structures such as tenses (Präsens, Perfekt, Imperfekt), modal verbs and subclauses.
3. Critically discuss current topics in German.
4. Demonstrate intercultural awareness in form of written reflection on a text or topic.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Reading Skills.
A variety of texts on topics such as family, work, traveling and nature will be read, analysed and discussed in a group setting..

Listening Skills.
A variety of authentic conversations will be listened to, analysed and repeated in class..

Writing Skills.
Students will write short texts, creative and formal, on given topics and current affairs..

Oral Skills.
Students will participate actively in interactive classroom sessions, implement new grammatical structures and speak freely on a given subject..

Current affairs.
Analysis of authentic materials including newspaper articles, extracts of television news and radio programmes etc. on a variety of contemporary topics relevant to German-speaking societies. This may also involve the gathering of materials by the learners themselves..

Role play.
A variety of everyday situations will be acted out and discussed in class..

Expressing one's opinion.
Students will learn to express their opinion in writing and orally..
