Description
This module is designed to provide an understanding of employee development activities in a range of organisational contexts. It aims to develop students knowledge and competence with respect to the role of the training and development department, the nature of learning and learning styles, the complex process of designing, delivery and evaluation training and development interventions, the management of careers and the role played by management development in organisations. The module also affords students the opportunity to identify, assess and develop the key skills which will greatly enhance their employability throughout their career. It also enables them to make more informed career decisions and thus prepare effectively for future employment opportunities.

Learning Outcomes
1. Discuss the nature of employee development and the contribution that it can make to the performance and progress of the individual and the organisation.
2. Evaluate key employee development concepts, theories and techniques.
3. Explain the environmental context in which employee development is designed, operated, reviewed and improved.
4. Discuss the relationship between employee development and other key areas of HRM in organisations.
5. Utilise appropriate skills to undertake a range of day to day employee development functions relating to the training and development process, workplace learning, career systems and management development programmes.
6. Evaluate postgraduate study and future career options in the area of HR.

Introduction to Employee Development.
Key terms and definitions; models and theories of employee development; employee development and HRM.

The National Context of Training and Development.
Training and development in Ireland - current and historical developmetns; international comparisons.

The Role of Training and Development.
Guest speaker; purposes of HRD; attitudes of HRD; responsibilities for HRD; role of the T&D specialists; managing the T&D function; n/aadding value to the business through HRD; costs and benefits of HRD; the T&D function in Ireland.

The Nature of Learning.
The nature of learning; theories of learning; learning styles; workplace learning; the learning organistion.

The Systematic Approach to Training and Development.
Establishing training needs, purposes and objectives; design of the training/learning event, delivery of training; formal and informal approaches to training and learning; evaluation of training/learning interventions.

Career Manangement and Development.
The concept of the career; the changing context of career management; the psychological contract; the business case for career management.

Management Development.
Nature of managerial work; dimensions of MD; approaches to MD; methods of MD; responsibility for MD; MD in Ireland.

Contemporary Developments in Learning and Development.
E-learning; blended learning; bite-size learning; knowledge management and the knowledge society; the changing role of the trainer; ethical issues in HRD.

Career Management Skills/Personal Development Planning.
