Description
The purpose of this module is to examine the Irish industrial relations framework and to familiarise students with the development and role of Irish industrial relations institutions and their usefulness in maintaining a productive workplace environment. The course will also explore the various theoretical perspectives on industrial relations institutions and their role in society and workplaces.In this module students will work in groups to debate contemporary industrial relations issues and trends. Students will also submit individual reports to explore contemporary industrial relations issues.

Learning Outcomes
1. An understanding of the roles of trade unions and employers' associations.
2. An understanding of the various industrial relations institutions' ability to resolve an array of industrial disputes.
3. An appreciation of the contemporary issues facing industrial relations institutions.
4. An appreciation of the various viewpoints that are held about the activities and motivations of industrial relations stakeholders including trade unions and employers' associations.
5. An ability to deliver a considered opinion on a contemporary industrial relations issue.

Trade Unions and Employer Organisations.
History, trends, diversity, objectives, internal organisation, financing, structures, special committees, services, role and effectiveness.

Industrial Relations Institutions..
Roles and operations: Labour Court, Labour Relations Commission - conciliation service, rights commissioners, advisory service, Employment Appeals Tribunal, Employment Equality Authority, Equality Tribunal, Joint Labour Committees, Joint Industrial Councils, Registered Agreements, Conciliation and Arbitration Schemes, Employer Labour Conference, National Implementation Body, Social Welfare Tribunal, National Employment Rights Authority, Dept. of Enterprise, Trade & Employment (Labour Affairs)..
