Description
Strategic human resource management is based on the recognition that an organisations effectiveness can be increased if its human resources are managed with HR policies and practices that deliver the right number of employees with appropriate behaviours, skills and competencies, and levels of motivation to the organisation. Defining what is appropriate, required and feasible for the organisation is set in the context of the organisations internal and external environments. A further challenge and complexity is that strategic human resource management is practiced in firms operating across several national borders. Thus, the practice of developing and implementing strategy, and consequently human resource practices and policies, in the multinational company (MNC) is considerably more complex and will be considered.Topics include the nature and development of HRM; the role of the HR manager and HR function; strategic HRM; International HRM and HR professional competencies. The course is organized around readings, discussions, cases, lectures and multi-media material.

2. Evaluate the role of the HR manager and HR function within the organisation
3. Analyse the key issues in strategic and international HRM from a research and practice base.
