Description
The module aims to introduce students to some of the essential aspects of Japanese culture, society and language. Students will be familiarised with a range of everyday situations requiring the use of specified linguistic skills. Students will be guided in the development of a range of language learning strategies and transferrable skills, such as independent learning. This module sets the level A2 from the Common European Framework of Reference as its minimum exit level.

Learning Outcomes
1. Write the hiragana and katakana alphabets
2. Write 350 kanji
3. Identify economic, social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland and Japan
4. Demonstrate listening skills by showing understanding of phrases and simple messages in everyday contexts
5. Extract information from a variety of different basic written texts
6. Employ effective communication skills in a range of social situations
7. Produce short texts, for example, personal emails, and write short basic descriptions of events, activities and personal experiences
