Description
This module sets the level A1 from the Common European Framework of Reference as its minimum exit level. The module aims to provide students with a solid foundation in Japanese language by developing students¿ receptive and productive skills in a variety of everyday situations. It aims to introduce students to some of the essential aspects of culture and society of Japan. Students will be guided in the development of a range of language learning strategies and transferable skills such as time management.

Learning Outcomes
1. Write the hiragana and katakana alphabets
2. Write 150 kanji
3. Translate simple sentences from Japanese into English
4. Translate simple sentences from English into Japanese
5. Write short passages in Japanese about daily life
6. Give examples of basic social and cultural differences between Japan and Ireland
7. Read simple authentic Japanese texts

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Reading Skills.
A variety of texts on topics such as family, everyday life, and nature will be read, analysed and discussed in a group setting. Memorization of Hiragana, Katakana and of various readings for each of the 150 new characters..

Listening Skills.
A variety of authentic conversations will be listened to, analysed and repeated in class..

Writing Skills.
Students will write short texts, creative and formal, on given topics. Memorization of Hiragana, Katakana and of various writings for each of the 150 new characters..

Oral Skills.
Students will participate actively in interactive classroom sessions, implement new grammatical structures and speak freely on a given subject..

Role Play.
A variety of everyday situations will be acted out and discussed in class..
