Description
This module sets the level A1-A2 from the Common European Framework of Reference as its minimum exit level. The module aims to build on the competences and skills previously acquired and to introduce students to new features of the language and aspects of the culture. Students will be familiarised with a wider range of everyday situations which go beyond those previously encountered and which will require the use of additional linguistic skills. The module also aims to develop further students? language learning strategies.

Learning Outcomes
1. Write the hiragana, katakana and 350 kanji
2. Translate short passages from Japanese into English
3. Translate simple passages from English into Japanese
4. Write short essays on everyday events
5. Give examples of basic social and cultural differences between Japan and Ireland
6. Read simple authentic Japanese texts

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Reading Skills.
A variety of texts on topics such as family, everyday life, travelling and nature will be read, analysed and discussed in a group setting. Memorization of various readings for each of the 200 new additional characters..

Listening Skills.
A variety of authentic conversations will be listened to, analysed and repeated in class..

Writing Skills.
Students will write short texts, creative and formal, on given topics. Memorization of various writings for each of the 200 new additional characters..

Oral Skills.
Students will participate actively in interactive classroom sessions, implement new grammatical structures and speak freely on a given subject..

Role Play.
A variety of everyday social situations will be acted out and discussed in class..
