Description
This module sets the level A1-A2 from the Common European Framework of Reference as its minimum exit level. The module aims to build on the competences and skills previously acquired and to introduce students to new features of the language and aspects of the culture. Students will be familiarised with a wider range of everyday situations which go beyond those previously encountered and which will require the use of additional linguistic skills. The module also aims to develop further students? language learning strategies.

Learning Outcomes
1. Write the hiragana, katakana and 350 kanji
2. Translate short passages from Japanese into English
3. Translate simple passages from English into Japanese
4. Write short essays on everyday events
5. Give examples of basic social and cultural differences between Japan and Ireland
6. Read simple authentic Japanese texts

Communicative situations related to everyday communication Increasingly complex target language structures in areas such as syntax and declension Essential notions of target culture as they arise in above communicative situations Consolidation of Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji previously learnt plus an additional 200 kanji More in-depth sociolinguistic awareness Increased language awareness Language learning strategies e.g. setting learning and monitoring language learning goals.
