Description
INACTIVE - Acquire sufficient communicative skills to function adequately during a period in Japan.- Increase proficiency in pronunciation and intonation.- Expand the language skills acquired in Japanese Language 3.- Develop information-gathering techniques.- Consolidation of 620 basic characters acquired previously.- Acquisition of additional 200 characters.- Introduction to formal language and letter writing.

Learning Outcomes
1. Acquire language skills to communicate in Japanese in everyday situations.
2. Show accuracy in pronunciation and pitch in spoken Japanese.
3. Recognise and reproduce 200 additional kanji (Japanese characters).
4. Read and comprehend non-specialist texts in Japanese.
5. Acquire ability to write essays on general social issues, and demonstrate ability to write simple formal letters.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Indicative Syllabus.
- Authentic relevant material relevant to everyday life in Japan.- Oral and aural comprehension and practice of above material- Gathering of relevant authentic materials.- Language learning (meta-cognitive) strategies e.g. group-learning, setting of goals, etc- Memorisation of various readings for each of the 200 new characters.- Introduction to some of the some formal levels of written Japanese.- Increased vocabulary usage, and introduction of more advanced grammatical structures.- Use of newspaper and magazine articles.Teaching Methods:Small classes of maximum 20 students subdivided for group and pair work.Interactive classroom and language laboratory sessions.Learning Methods: Learner centred.Team work.Use of multi-media facilities with emphasis on audio-visual equipment.Assessment:- Special regulations: 1.
