Description
This module prepares students to produce a substantial written research report in Japanese on a cultural, economic, social or other topic to be agreed with the module coordinator.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate the capacity to complete a piece of research on a relevant topic, written in Japanese.
2. Plan and manage their own work over a prescribed period.
3. Critically select, appraise and synthesise academic and other relevant literature relating to this topic.
4. Identify cultural, economic, political or social issues emerging from their research and respond appropriately.
5. Show competence in writing formal academic Japanese.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Production of research Project.
Under the supervision of the DCU Exchange Coordinator for Japanese, students will produce a short thesis , written in Japanese, on a subject which may be chosen from any aspect of Japanese culture & society, history & politics, language & literature, media, film & the visual arts. The project will be the outcome of independent research and reading. Consulting with their supervisor as required, students will choose their topic, develop a research methodology, collect and assess relevant materials, and read and analyze a broad range of sources. The thesis will present an argument which combines materials and analysis in a coherent structure, and is expressed in a manner and format in accordance with the norms of academic research..
