Description
This unit aims to develop students’ understanding of Chinese and Japanese culture and society and how these are reflected in language use, with particular reference to business / marketing discourse. Topics will be discussed, where appropriate, in comparison to Western, especially Irish culture. The module not only explores different ways in which social and cultural norms are realised in language use, particularly in professional environments, it also addresses how a cognitive approach can provide a unified account for differences at a surface level. This module takes a contrastive perspective between the targeted cultures and languages and Western cultures and languages. One of the goals of this module is to help students distinguish fact from opinion, identify point of view and objectivity, understand bias, and recognize multiple perspectives in the media.

Learning Outcomes
1. Develop an understanding of key elements of Chinese and Japanese cultures and societies, and how these are reflected in language use
2. Carry out autonomous research on a chosen topic in Chinese or Japanese culture and language
3. Carry out comparative analysis (between Western and Asian cultures) on a chosen topic
4. Present research findings in class
5. Produce a written analysis comparing selected aspects of Western and Chinese or Japanese culture(s)
