This module is designed: To consolidate and extend language and other communication skills acquired during the year abroad in Japan. To acquire skills to deal with a broad range of complex language tasks in a wide variety of contexts. To be able to use appropriate levels of formality in different social situations, both orally and in written for. To provide a foundation for the acquisition and maintenance of a thorough knowledge of Japanese current affairs. To equip students with comprehensive active knowledge of Japanese letter writing styles in different registers and for different purposes. To enable students to engage directly with Japanese literary texts and to respond critically to both set and unseen texts. 1. Show competence in a broad range of complex language tasks in a wide variety of contexts. 2. Use appropriate levels of formality in different social situations, both orally and in written form. 3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of literary texts in Japanese, drawn from a prescribed range of poetry and novels, and be able to apply literary insights to new and unseen extracts from literary texts. 4. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of contemporary Japanese political and economic developments. 5. Write a broad range of letters to suit various different social and professional situations, with a clear knowledge of the social concepts behind letter writing, letter format, seasonal greetings and other fixed Japanese expressions. 6. Literature readings. Students are introduced to literary texts in Japanese, where a combination of guided reading in class and independent reading in set texts develop their capacities to interrogate the texts and form sustainable critical opinions. The ability to cope with and respond to unseen texts will be developed in this module.. Reading and Writing skills. Students will read texts drawn from Japanese news media, to develop their critical reading abilities, and to support their acquisition of self-sustaining knowledge of Japanese current affairs at an appropriately detailed level. Independent reading will be supported, and direction on suitable contemporary texts will be provided.Students will write essays on their specialized areas of interest.Students will become proficient in the important Japanese skills of letter-writing in different registers and for different purposes.. Oral and Aural Skills. Students will practice their oral and aural skills, through debate, discussion and role-play in the classroom context. Students will achieve a comfortable familiarity with different registers of politeness, appropriate to different social situations and contexts.The social and business importance of an active and developing knowledge of Japanese current affairs will be taught to the students, and this knowledge will be draw upon as content in oral and aural skills development. Japanese electronic media output (news, current affairs, drama) will be used in the classroom to provide contemporary content suitable for use for the development of aural skills.
