- to make you aware of the nature of special languages- to introduce you to the field of lexicography- to teach you to source and research terms and definitions- to show you how to establish equivalence in terminology- to distinguish between varieties of language- to investigate key factors involved in language change- to analyse language planning and standardization strategies

3. Formulate new definitions where existing definitions are inadequate
