Description
The module aims to introduce students to the basic knowledge of Chinese language and culture in such a way as to facilitate intercultural communication in the future when they have contact with Chinese people. It also provides students with the fundamental concepts of Chinese geography, history, language and philosophies of Confucius and Chinese folk customs/traditions.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate a good understanding of Chinese values, traditional customs and thinking, in order to participate in the cross-cultural communication with the Chinese.
2. Critically review the role of Chinese culture plays in the various forms of Chinese life such as language, literature and core values.
3. Recognize and reproduce the basic vocabulary necessary for daily communication in Chinese.
4. Engage in the classroom discussion on the selected topics and demonstrate research capabilities in such topics.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Lectures.
A brief introduction to Chinese art, history, language, religions and traditional folk customs. The foundamental knowledge of Chinese language in daily life..

Audio/Visual Presentations.
A series of audio/visual materials, including films and TV programmes, will be used to demonstrate the use of Chinese language and the core values of Chinese culture..

Seminars.
The seminars will discuss the essental concepts and topics drawn from the lectures, in order to deepen the understanding of Chinese language and culture..
