This module is designed to introduce students to the key theoretical foundation of main modes of screen translation with some practical hands-on experience of subtitling.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain current screen translation norms.
2. Evaluate critically the main techniques involved in screen translation.
3. Demonstrate skills of subtitling in a practical exercise by using a subtitling package.
4. Conduct research on screen translation and make oral and written group presentations.

ProjectStudents undertake a group project. The choice is either a practical subtitling project with commentary or a critical essay. The practical option normally involves selecting a short audiovisual clip and providing English subtitles. The essay option involves writing a critical essay on a topic within the field of audiovisual translation. Groups will be made up of 2-3 students and all contributors will be assigned the same mark, the onus being on the group to ensure full participation and cooperation of all members.95%Sem 1 End
