Description

The purpose of this module is to allow students to investigate the particular cultural forms which national consciousness and identity take in different national contexts, and to understand the pressures exerted on national identities by contemporary forces of globalisation. Students who have spent a year abroad will be able to situate their empirical knowledge of countries and cultures in a theoretical framework. Students are expected to attend lectures, pursue independent reading, and make comparisons between different national situations

Learning Outcomes

1. Explain the concept of collective identity
2. Contrast different cultural modes of group belonging as they have emerged historically
3. Situate empirical knowledge of countries and cultures in a theoretical framework
4. Describe the transformation of European collective identities in the era of nation-state formation from the French Revolution to European integration and the effects of globalisation
5. Critically assess various theoretical and philosophical positions on nationalism and national identity as they present themselves in the literature
