Description
To enable students to think critically about the role of language in society and be able to comment in an informed manner on approaches to this subject.To introduce students to aspects of sociolinguistics, particularly the themes of language, identity and multilingualism, minority languages and the case of Irish, power and language in World English(es),communication and interculturalism including non-verbal communication,and language variation and Irish English.To introduce students to the history of languages and questions of language dominance.

Learning Outcomes
1. Give an account of sociolinguistic theories of language dominance and language varieties
2. Describe the political and historical context of the dominance of English world-wide and of the emergence of varieties of English
3. Differentiate and explain the categories of standard English and varieties of English
4. Give an account of the theoretical issues surrounding language and identity and the practical issues surrounding multilingualism
5. Describe the features of a variety of English, and assess to what extent Irish English can be described as a standard variety of English
6. Explain the justification for particular language policies in Europe and post-colonial settings
7. Give an account of the intercultural dimensions of non-verbal communication
