Description
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to a comparative approach to different national experiences of immigration, multiculturalism, ethnic mixing and religious and cultural pluralism. Students will learn to identify recurrent structures in multicultural societies, as well as local differences. Students will learn to apply the techniques and terms of comparison studied to other nationalsituations with which they are familiar. Students are expected to attend lectures/seminars and to pursue substantial independent reading and research.

1. Identify recurrent issues relating to the experience of cultural and ethnic diversity
2. Identify the main features which make up multiculturalist policies
3. Assess the impact of national history and identity on attitudes to difference
4. Compare different national approaches to cultural diversity

Multicultural theory.
History of multiculturalism as a policy area. Key areas of policy debate.

National experiences of multiculturalism.
Case studies on Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Japan, US/Canada.

Research methods.
Academic writing; quantitative and qualitative research; questionnaires; critical discourse analysis.
