Description
The module aims to introduce students to the basic knowledge of Chinese language and culture in such a way as to facilitate intercultural communication in the future when they have contact with Chinese people. It also enhances students' understanding of key aspects of China's interaction and exchange with the West, both about its past and present, in an interdisciplinary manner.

Learning Outcomes
1. Investigate and analyse key concepts for understanding the diversity and plurality of Chinese culture.
2. Critically review the role of Chinese culture plays in the various forms of Chinese life such as language, economics, social hierarchy.
3. Identity the broad changes and the transformation in China and the world in order to understand how these come to influence the Chinese ways of life.
4. Understand the Chinese words which demonstrate the cultural and social developments in China, and be aware of the cultural differences when communicating with Chinese.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Lectures.
The lectures will be structured around the following topics in an interactive seminar style: the role of Chinese culture plays in love, sex and marrriage; the relationship between Chinese culture and language; the relationship between Chinese culture and economics/nationalism; domestic migration and oversea Chinese..

Audio/Visual Presentations.
Audio/visual materials, including selected Chinese videos, films and TV programmes, will be used and analysed to support language learning and the inter-cultural communication..

Seminars.
In addition to the lectures, a series of seminars will provide the opportunities to students to discuss the selected topics and deepen the understanding of Chinese language and culture..
