To provide students with a basic introduction to the Chinese language and culture in such a way as to facilitate intercultural communication in the future when they have contact with Chinese people. To introduce students to the fundamental philosophies of Confucius (Big Culture C) and Chinese folk customs/traditions (Small Culture c) and help them learn the basics of the Chinese language. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1. Demonstrate an understanding of Chinese values, traditional customs, and way of thinking. 2. Appraise and engage with concepts of cross-cultural communication with Chinese people. 3. Demonstrate beginner's basic knowledge of Chinese grammatical structures and vocabulary used on daily communication. 4. Chinese Language and Culture. Introduction to the Confucian value system - Comparison with Western values.Exploration of the influence and expression of Confucian values in Chinese society (historically and currently).Implications of above for intercultural communication between China and other countries.Chinese customs and folk legends.Introduction to the Chinese language, both spoken and written.The above will be explored through lectures, group discussions, video and case studies. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
