Description

This module critically examines legal attempts to combat discrimination and promote equality in a comparative context; in particular, it focuses on the rules of Irish and EU anti-discrimination law. It examines the structural nature and practice of discrimination and assesses the role and effectiveness of law in tackling and remedying this phenomenon.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe and outline the scope and operation of the rules of anti-discrimination law
2. Apply the law to factual situations and construct an effective argument
3. Distinguish between the contested meanings of equality and discrimination
4. Critically assess the effectiveness of anti-discrimination law with reference to specific legal instruments and scholarly material
5. Appraise the nature, influence and impact of EU law in this area
