Description
This module aims to introduce students to the key issues in politics and development in South Asia, providing them with the theoretical and conceptual tools to evaluate and analyse these issues. While the diversity of countries, languages, cultures, histories and political structures across the region make this a challenging course, the commonalities of experiences across South Asian states from colonialism through to the present facilitate an analysis and understanding of many of important issues.

4. Critically assess the role of peace processes in South Asian conflicts

1. Introduction: Understanding politics of peace and conflict in South Asia from a historical approach within the context of contemporary politics; identifying the historical progression of the intra-state, inter-state and regional conflicts..
2. Politics of interpretation of South Asian history from pre-colonial to post-colonial times.

3. Understanding the Sri Lankan conflict; local, regional and global dimensions; a reappraisal of the peace process.
4. Identifying politics of intra-state, inter-states conflicts of India and regional and global implications.

5. Local and global dimensions of conflicts in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
6. Peace Process in Nepal and its future challenges.

7. Interstate and intrastate conflicts in Bangladesh.
8. Democratic reforms in Bhutan and Maldives.

9. Addressing main issues of human rights, democracy, development and peace-building in South Asia as a region.
10. Politics of Peace Processes in South Asia; local, regional and global contributions?.
