Description
The development policy option builds on the first year module lg517. That module analysed the key phases in thinking on international development from the 1950s to the present day. In it you were made aware of the different schools of thought that have influenced development policy. This option assumes knowledge of these schools of thought, and it examines the dynamic processes by which policy change happens in the real world and the role of diverse actors in that process. It provides students with an understanding of the how policy change happens by examining theories of policy change and applying them to key aspects of current development policy. The models covered including policy diffusion and transfer, the role of international norms, the impact of institutions and ideational change. The models will then be used to examine the processes by which policy changes (or change is resisted), and the role of diverse actors in that process including donor’s countries, International Financial Institutions, recipient state governments and civil society in the policy processes. This framework is then used to examine selected policy areas in detail with the aim of understanding the motivation of actors in supporting or implementing particular policies, the current challenges to existing policies and the interrelationship between different policy areas. It will be of particular interest to anyone considering going on to work in policy development, policy research or as part of a campaigning organisation
