Description
Development Education emerged as a concept in the 1970s in response to the realisation of governments with aid budgets, missionaries, and NGDOs working in the developing world that an important dimension of their development work would be to increase a deeper understanding of development issues amongst the population at home. From the outset DE was charged with the tension between being an educational concept in the field of learning and a tool to secure public support for aid or to help with fundraising initiatives. As a concept that connects "development" and "education" it has since been developed as an educational approach with influences from various sides, the NGO sector, activists, campaigners and educationalists. This module seeks to provide an overview of the many different aspects of DE and to critically examine the present understanding of DE, its theoretical framework, the policy and practice of DE and the methodological approaches used by development educators. The module aims to: introduce students to development education theory, development education methodologies, the history of the concept of development education and current issues and debates in the field of development education; and to to critically examine the concepts of development, global citizenship and education with a global perspective.

Learning Outcomes
1. Develop a deeper understanding of the key theoretical and conceptual issues and debates in Development Education.
2. Critically analyse the concept of development education as an educational approach in which the issue of development and education are conceptually intertwined.
3. Connect current debates in development studies as well as an appreciation of development education as an educational approach linked to critical literacy and critical pedagogy.
