Description
The course introduces students to the complexity of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Unlike other contemporary conflicts and despite its relative small scale, the Arab-Israeli one has tremendous global repercussions. The purpose of the course is not only to analyse in detail the origin and development of the conflict, but also to provide an in-depth analysis of both Israeli and Palestinian societies. Without a profound understanding and knowledge of the ‘domestic’ dynamics of both Israel and Palestine it becomes very difficult to explain the multi-faceted nature of the conflict. Finally, the course examines the interaction of local and international dynamics, which make the conflict and its solution such a fundamental issue in contemporary affairs. The course however does not examine the conflict and the issues it raises in isolation. These are in fact paradigmatic of a number of trends that have characterised political developments across the world, namely the rise of right-wing parties, the increase in religiosity, the decline of the left or use of violence to obtain political goals.

Learning Outcomes
1. To explain the many facets of the conflict.
2. To identify the central issues of the conflict.
3. To connect the issues specific to the conflict with wider political themes
4. To evaluate the role of religion in politics.
