Description
The European Union is a complex and continually evolving international organisation. Significant developments in terms of thewidening anddeepening of the European Union have taken place relatively recently, including enlargement to include twelve new member states and attempts at major policy changes, up to and including the developments contained in the new Lisbon Treaty. This “Development of the EU” course assumes no prior knowledge of the EU. Hence, the first two lectures will give an overview of the major institutions of the EU and the theoretical aspects of European integration. The rest of the module is split between (1) examining the policies implemented by the European Union that have global impact i.e. trade, agriculture, environment and security and defence and (2) exploring current and contentious issues facing the European Union e.g. the accession of Turkey, relations with the United States of America, the democratic deficit and the constitutionalization of the EU/Lisbon Treaty.

Learning Outcomes
1. Have a critical understanding of the major policy issues and current political developments in the European Union
2. Apply theoretical tools to think and write about the European Union
3. Take a position in the major debates triggered by the processes of widening and deepening of the EU and its 'global actor' identity
