Description
This subject locates marketing in the wider context of business ethics and consumer culture, both in the manner in which marketing influences culture and in the way culture shapes marketing practice. Marketing, as a managerial-led, science-focused endeavour, has undergone a radical assessment of its scope and boundaries in recent times. This module introduces undergraduates to the marketing and society toolkit in terms of analyzing marketing’s roles in contemporary society.

Learning Outcomes
1. Discuss and critically evaluate a wide range of perspectives on the position of marketing in society.
2. Improve both desk research and field research skills.
3. Choreograph conference style presentations of academic work.
4. Produce effective teamwork by examining abstract ideas in class discussion.

Introduction to module, assessment and what is marketing in society framework - macromarketing - plus weekly discussion articles posted on moodle.

Marketing the Unmentionable plus overview of Observation Exercise.
Lecture and Directions for Field exercise to begin a reflective journal.

Marketing to Children - Mattel And Toy Recalls.
Lecture and Analysis of Case: Submission of assignment.

Marketing the Story of Stuff plus Class Debate on Markets.
Lecture plus debate. Using the discussion texts provided to assist their arguments students will perform a class debate. The class has to arrange to video the debate and subsequently upload it to ‘youtube’ to provide them with feedback on performance. It should be organized along the lines of a British style parliamentary debate; debating teams will debate the following motion, “This house believes Human Body Organs should be Bought and Sold?”.
