Description

To develop an understanding of the physical structure of the human body and the relationships among structures

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe and illustrate the physical structure of the human body including cells, tissues, organs and the 11 human body's organ systems.
2. Relate the human body's anatomy to the body's physiology.
3. Describe the relationship and interaction between various structures, organs and organ systems of the human body.
4. Identify medical devices engineered to replace and improve the function of the human body's organs and/or systems.
5. Write and present a well organised project report.
6. Understand and discuss the need for ethical standards and practice in biomedical engineering.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Detail the anatomical position and anatomical terminology for movement.
Explain the levels of structural organisation of the body.

Explain the structure and functions of cells and tissues.
Detail the major cavities of the body and their components.

Name the organs of the neuromusculoskeletal system, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the immune system, the endocrine system and the urinary system.
Detail the location and function of the above systems.
