Description
The first part of this module aims to equip stuidents with the technical, written and presentational skills required to undertake a project. Students will participate in the following activities : Lab Session (two hours a week), Library Tour, Presentation Practice. The aim of the fourth year project is to give the students an opportunity to investigate a topic of mathematical interest. The students will combine and reinforce skills acquired in earlier years, they will also develop writing, research, presentation and interpersonal skills. Students will participate in the following learning activities. Supervision: Students will be assigned a supervisor at the beginning of semester 1. The student will have regular meetings with the supervisor. In the initial meetings the supervisor will recommend articles and books to read and introduce the student to some of the key ideas of the project. As the student gains a deeper understanding of the topic, the student will be expected to contribute fully to the discussion during these meetings.Reading: Students are expected to fully utilise the library and its resources to research their chosen topic.Writing: Students are required to produce a substantial report.Presentation: Each student will make a presentation on their project at the end of Semester 2 to a small group of staff of the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Learning Outcomes
1. Extract and digest the main scientific ideas contained in a piece of published research.
2. Supply the technical details missing from the main source article, including finding appropriate references for the relevant results and concepts.
3. Apply critical analysis to the specific approach followed.
4. Take responsibility for the progression of their own work under the guidance of a supervisor.
5. Write a well-structured report containing a balance between broad overview and technical details.
6. Produce documents using Latex
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of grammar and clear writing in written reports.
8. Demonstrate an understanding of the conventions and notation used in mathematical writing and of the importance of logical argument.
