Description
Module Aims: The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the key issues that must be considered in order to successfully develop and manage information systems. Students will increase their knowledge as to the factors that influence the successful adoption and implementation of information systems. The approach taken examines the user context, the organisational context and the competitive environment context within which information systems operate. It also examines the security challenges associated with the management of information systems and students will gain understanding as to how those security challenges can be proactively addressed. This module will also provide a platform of knowledge that enables participants to evaluate the ethical problems that can arise in the use of information systems. Additionally, in this module, students' competence in use of Excel will be increased. Students are expected to attend lectures and also attend weekly Excel tutorials.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the development and maintenance of information systems including their specification, project management, implementation (using tools such as the systems design and development lifecycle), as well as prototyping, systems analysis and design and system conversion approaches.
2. Describe the stages involved in structured project management.
3. Outline the issues involved in managing information systems including - organisation for and management of end-user computing.
4. Describe the ethical, legal, privacy, security and other issues resulting from the dependence of society and business on computers.
5. Select and apply the appropriate Excel function for a given context
6. Have successfully completed a project which demonstrates their competence in using Excel.

Such private study will include preparation for specific classes – for example to discuss a case, and other study related to assignments or to consolidate the material from lectures
Independent learning22While being given some direction at lectures, students will be asked to study independently in the computer labs and learn Excel using online resources
