Operations management involves the systematic planning, designing and operating, controlling and improving the processes that transform inputs into finished goods and services. Managing operations is critical to the success of all types of organisations, from manufacturing through to services. Operations management is increasingly encapsulated in an international context. This module aims to demonstrate and critically evaluate the role of operations management and its contribution to business competitiveness in an international context. This module is delivered through a combination of lectures and in-class practical exercises.

Learning Outcomes
1. Critically appraise the role and contribution of the operations function in modern businesses
2. Demonstrate the systematic approach required for the analysis of the key functions, responsibilities and challenges of operations management
3. Critically appraise the effectiveness of alternative designs of products, services and processes
4. Apply appropriate operations management solutions to problems in a variety of organisational situations
5. Demonstrate and differentiate operations management at company, local and international levels
6. Show a critical awareness of current and relevant issues in the operations management field informedby leading-edge research and practice
