At the end of this module, students will have developed a 'literacy' about the characteristics, concepts, and major ideas of information systems and their relationsihp to the management and strategy of organisations.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain the context and characteristics of the networked digital economy
2. Discuss developments in software, hardware and networking that enable the development of the digital economy
3. Identify the basis of opportunities for and appraise the potential of both information systems and information to contribute to competitive advantage
4. Explain the main concepts and tools linking information systems to business value
5. Explain the main issues in the effective sourcing, development, management, and security of information systems

Lecture22A formal lecture which typically presents the essential ideas, core concepts, and structures for each topic and which points students towards resources where they can get further information. Students are expected to prepare for each lecture by, for example, reading materials suggested by the lecturer and then take part actively in class discussions
Independent learning time22Students are expected to study the recommended textbooks and journal articles, and are expected to read further around the topics in each class. Such private study will include preparation for specific classes and other study related to assignments or to consolidate the material from lectures

Introduction to the module.
Development of the digital economy.

Characteristics of the digital economy.
General characteristics, information goods, and network effects.

Information systems and competetitive advantage.
Controversies including the productivity paradox of information systems, and 'IT doesn't matter'. Evolution of thinking on the contribution of information systems to competitive advantage.

Benefits Management from information systems.
Deriving business benefits from information systems: Planning; IS investment appraisal; governance; and business-IT alignment.

Managing information systems.
Sourcing, acquisition, development, and implementation of information systems; IT as a service; information systems risks & vulnerabilities in , security management frameworks, and business continuity.
