This module aims to ensure students gain an understanding of the main classification of occupational health risks and the mechanisms for monitoring and controlling health risks

Learning Outcomes
1. Verify the main classification of occupational health risks
2. Explain the epidemiology of occupational ill-health and disease
3. Ascertain and defend the need for systematic approaches to occupational ill-health and diseases
4. Determine the key elements of health surveillance techniques

Content.
Development of occupational health as a distinct discipline.Classification of occupational ill-health and diseases.Normal and adverse responses of the body to chemical, physical and biological agents routes of attack, dose, effects on body system (central nervous system, respiratory tract, cardiovascular system, liver, kidney, reproductive effects).Epidemiology of occupational ill-health and diseases. Epidemiological data, including morbidity/mortality statistics.Statutory requirements for health surveillance.Confidentiality and the occupational physician.The role of the occupational medical service. Models for the rehabilitation of ill workers; managing absenteeism arising from ill heath.Health promotion in the workplace; the relationship with the social context of ill health (eg. smoking as a workplace and societal issue).
